Below we have provided potential questions you may want ask the support worker.
Personal attributes
- Why have you chosen to work as a care or support worker?
- What do you like about being a care or support worker?
- What specific qualities and skills do you believe you have that make you a good care or support worker?
- Are there any tasks or duties that you are unwilling to perform?
Previous experience
- For how many years have you been doing care or support work?
- Please give examples of your prior experience.
- What tasks did you do in your previous jobs?
In the caring role
- Social companionship role - what activities do you like to do with a person you are caring for?
- What would you do if you arrived at the home of the person you are caring for and they did not open the front door?
- What would you do if you entered the home of the person you were caring for and found the person unconscious?
- Can you give me an example of a situation when you were caring for someone and you showed initiative?
- Can you please give me an example of an emergency situation that you handled well.
Contracts and documentation
Ask the care or support worker to present any relevant documentation including:
- National Police Check Certificate or NDIS worker screening check
- Working with Children Check (if relevant)
- ID documentation e.g. drivers license, passport
- The names and contact numbers of two references that you can call
Ask the care or support worker their visa status and working rights (relevant for non-Australian citizens only)
Specific to the job
Describe the job including duties required, dates and times needed. The goal is to make sure the care or support worker has a very clear understanding of what the job involves.
