Sample interview questions for a potential care or support worker

Please note that all care and support workers on Careseekers are required to have obtained a National Police Certificate in the last 12 months. Below we have provided potential questions you may want ask the support worker.

Personal attributes

• Why have you chosen to work as a care or support worker? 
• What do you like about being a care or support worker? 
• What specific qualities and skills do you believe you have that make you a good care or support worker? 
• Are there any tasks or duties that you are unwilling to perform?

Previous experience

• For how many years have you been doing care or support work?
• Please give examples of your prior experience. 
• What tasks did you do in your previous jobs?

In the caring role

• Social companionship role - what activities do you like to do with a person you are caring for? 
• What would you do if you arrived at the home of the person you are caring for and they did not open the front door? 
• What would you do if you entered the home of the person you were caring for and found the person unconscious? 
• Can you give me an example of a situation when you were caring for someone and you showed initiative? 
• Can you please give me an example of an emergency situation that you handled well.

Contracts and documentation 

Ask the care or support worker to present any relevant documentation including:

• National Police Check Certificate or NDIS worker screening check
• Working with Children Check (if relevant)
• ID documentation e.g. drivers license, passport
• The names and contact numbers of two references that you can call 

Ask the care or support worker their visa status and working rights (relevant for non-Australian citizens only)

Specific to the job

Describe the job including duties required, dates and times needed. The goal is to make sure the care or support worker has a very clear understanding of what the job involves.
