Continence management refers to assisting an individual achieve and maintain control of their bladder or bowel functions through keeping the bladder healthy, identifying treatment if necessary and emotional support and advice.
Some common treatments include:
- Medication
- Increased fluid intake
- High fiber diet
- Pelvic floor exercises
- Training in good toilet habits
- Aids such as incontinence pads
Treatment may take some time to work or may only manage but not cure the incontinence. It is important to remember that your client may feel deeply distressed or ashamed about their incontinence. Aim to be calm and patient and talk openly with your client. Despite treatment, accidents may occur from time to time, try to keep a relaxed attitude.
