If you are arranging disability support through the NDIS, one of the first things you will want to understand is what a support worker can cost.
The short answer is that there is no single rate for every NDIS support worker. Costs depend on the type of support, the worker’s experience, the timing of the shift, and how the participant’s plan is managed. Under the current NDIS framework, NDIA-managed and plan-managed supports must follow the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits where they apply, while self-managed participants are not subject to those pricing arrangements and can negotiate prices directly with providers. The current 2025-26 pricing settings took effect on 24 November 2025.
Why NDIS support worker costs vary
NDIS support is not one single service, so the cost is not one-size-fits-all either.
A worker providing community access, daily routine support or domestic help may be priced differently from a worker providing personal care or more involved day-to-day assistance. Costs can also vary depending on whether support is delivered on a weekday, weekend, evening or overnight, and whether the arrangement is regular or more ad hoc. The NDIA’s pricing framework uses a disability support worker cost model, which is one reason price limits differ depending on the type and timing of support.
What if the participant is self-managed?
If the participant is self-managed, there is more flexibility.
Self-managed participants can use registered or unregistered providers, are not subject to the NDIS pricing arrangements, and can negotiate prices directly. The NDIA also says self-managers can shop around for best value and negotiate the price of supports with providers. On Careseekers, that means you can speak directly with independent workers and negotiate a rate that suits the arrangement.
What if the participant is plan-managed or NDIA-managed?
If the participant is plan-managed or NDIA-managed, the pricing rules are tighter.
In those arrangements, providers must follow the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits where the relevant limits apply. That means the support worker’s rate may be shaped by NDIA pricing rules rather than only by private negotiation. Participants and providers can still negotiate lower prices, but the price limits set the upper boundary where they apply.
Can you still negotiate rates on Careseekers?
Yes, you can negotiate directly with workers on Careseekers.
Our workers are independent and set their own rates. If the support arrangement allows for negotiation, you can speak directly with workers and agree on a rate that fits the support needed and the participant’s budget. For self-managed participants, this flexibility is especially important because self-managed supports are not subject to the NDIS pricing arrangements.
What should you compare besides the rate?
Hourly rate matters, but it should not be the only thing you compare.
It also helps to look at:
- the type of support included
- whether personal care is involved
- the worker’s experience and qualifications
- whether the support is weekday, weekend or overnight
- whether the participant is self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed
- whether the arrangement gives you the flexibility and continuity you want
Often, the best value comes from finding the right worker and the right arrangement, not just the lowest number.
